Servant's Heart Leadership Academy, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, offers a K-12 education with a focus on leadership, outreach, and community service. Mellissa explained that the academy strives to provide a positive atmosphere for youth, where they are equipped with skills, values, and principles that empower them to become productive members of their homes, churches, and communities. The academy places a strong emphasis on outreach and leadership, following the model of Jesus, who “did not come to be served, but to serve.”
The academy was born out of a deep desire to serve the community, a passion shared by Mellissa and her husband. They wanted to reach out to youth in an area affected by issues such as broken homes, alcoholism, and drug addiction. Mellissa recounted how her own background and struggles with confidence in her youth sparked her desire to help young people. She realized the importance of teaching children about their God-given gifts and purpose early on in life.
The Call to Serve and Educate
Before founding the academy, Mellissa spent six years as a public school teacher, during which she and her husband, who came from a broken home, began dedicating their lives to serving others. Together, they envisioned helping families in underserved neighborhoods by offering community activities, meals, and sharing the gospel.
This calling intensified as Mellissa and her husband felt a shift in their hearts. Despite Mellissa’s initial reluctance to leave the public school system, she felt God calling her back home to focus on her family and homeschool her youngest son. At the same time, her husband felt a conviction to leave his job and start a plumbing business called Servant’s Heart Plumbing. Their goal was to use the profits to fund initiatives that would benefit the youth in their community.
The success of their business opened the door for conversations with other believers who shared their vision. Soon, they formed a board of directors composed of pastors, business owners, and teachers, all of whom shared a burden for the youth. What started as a dream of providing a safe place for after-school tutoring and activities quickly grew into the establishment of Servant's Heart Leadership Academy. The school opened its doors in August 2022, just two months after the idea was proposed.
A Ministry in Education
Mellissa believes that education is more than just academics—it’s a ministry. Both she and her husband serve as youth leaders in their church, and Mellissa sees the academy as an extension of their ministry. The school is not just a place where students learn, but a place where they are loved, prayed over, and instilled with the Word of God.
Through community partnerships and sponsorships, the academy is able to provide education to families who may not otherwise afford it. Local businesses and church members sponsor students, and the school operates within their church’s building at no cost. Mellissa shared that the support they have received from their church and other community members has been overwhelming, with many stepping in to volunteer, donate, and sponsor children in need.
One of the most touching stories Mellissa shared involved a family whose children had lost their father and were struggling in public school. Through the academy, these children, who face dyslexia and speech issues, are not only thriving academically but also growing in character and confidence. The personalized, faith-based education they receive has been life-changing for them and their family.
The Role of the Church in Education
When discussing the role of the church in education, Mellissa emphasized that Christian education offers an incredible ministry opportunity for churches to make an impact in their communities. She sees churches as a vital support system for schools like Servant's Heart Leadership Academy, whether through providing a location, sponsoring students, or offering volunteers.
Mellissa encourages pastors and church members to pay attention to where God is moving in their communities and to get involved in those areas. Christian schools offer an alternative to public education, particularly for families who want a more personalized and faith-based environment for their children. These schools are a grassroots movement, led by individuals who feel called to serve, but they need the support of the larger body of Christ to succeed.
The Future of Servant's Heart Leadership Academy
Looking ahead, Mellissa envisions continued growth for the academy, including expanding to serve more students and eventually moving into a larger facility. She also hopes to continue building partnerships with other churches and organizations in the Cedar Creek Lake area to further their mission of raising up young leaders who serve their community.
At its core, Servant's Heart Leadership Academy is about transforming lives—both inside and outside the classroom.
